If you’re headed to Southeast Alaska, there’s one thing you need to understand:
Fishing here is full of surprises. Some days you’ll reel in cod, other days it might be a lingcod. Both are exciting, but they’re very different fish, and knowing the difference will make your fishing experience even better.
This could be you...
The anglers who catch the most memorable fish know their species or are with people who know them. Cod and lingcod have unique habits, flavors, and quirks, and understanding those differences makes every trip more fun.
Here’s what we’ve learned from years on the water:
COD (The Classic)
Cod is a classic favorite for anglers and home cooks alike. In Alaska, Pacific cod is the species you’ll encounter most often. Cod are typically silver-gray with lighter undersides and can grow to impressive sizes, though most caught on charter trips weigh between 10 and 25 pounds.
Cod are bottom-dwelling fish and are often found near sandy or muddy sea floors. They are known for their mild flavor, flaky white meat, and versatility in the kitchen. Cod is excellent baked, broiled, or pan-seared, making it a great choice for families or anyone new to cooking fish.
Appearance: Silvery-gray, smooth, lighter belly
Size: Commonly 10–25 pounds on a charter trip
Habitat: Sandy or muddy bottoms, often in schools
Behavior: Mellow, schooling fish, easy to find on bottom rigs
Taste: Mild, flaky white meat
Cooking Tip: Bake, broil, or pan-sear with butter, garlic, or lemon
Cod is the classic. Reliable, approachable, and perfect for beginners or anyone who loves simple, delicious fish.
LINGCOD (The Ambusher)
Lingcod are not actually cod, though the name can be confusing. They belong to a separate family of fish and are easily distinguishable by their elongated bodies and large mouths filled with sharp teeth. Lingcod can be greenish-brown with mottled patterns, giving them a more dramatic appearance than cod.
Lingcod are ambush predators that hide among rocks and reefs, waiting to snap up smaller fish and invertebrates. They are prized for their firm, white meat with a slightly richer flavor than cod. Lingcod fillets hold together well during cooking, making them perfect for grilling or baking.
Appearance: Greenish-brown, mottled, elongated body, big teeth
Size: Can grow very large—angler favorite for a challenge
Habitat: Rocky reefs, kelp beds, hidden among rocks
Behavior: Solitary predator, aggressive, loves to bite
Taste: Firm, rich, holds up well to bold flavors
Cooking Tip: Grill, bake, or use bold marinades for flavor
Lingcod are the thrill seekers of the ocean. Catching one is an adventure, and their meat is hearty and flavorful.
