From Deck to Door: Fish Processing, Yields, and Transportation at Sportsman’s Cove Lodge

At Sportsman’s Cove Lodge, we believe your Alaskan fishing experience should feel effortless from start to finish. The moment you land your catch is just the beginning. What happens after you leave the water matters just as much, especially when you are planning to bring that experience home with you.

That is why we handle every step of the process for you, from filleting to packaging to transportation. You focus on the fishing, the moments, and the people you are with. We take care of the rest.

Fish Processing

So fresh and so clean 🎶

After a full day on the water, the last thing you want to worry about is what to do with your catch. When you return to the lodge, our team steps in immediately to begin processing your fish with care and precision.

Each fish is handled individually to ensure the highest quality. Our standard fillets are cut into 4 ounce portions, which makes them easy to cook and portion once you are back home. If you have a preference for larger or smaller cuts, our team is happy to accommodate. We want your fish to be exactly how you plan to enjoy it.

Every fish goes through a detailed process that includes:

  • Filleting with precision to maximize usable meat

  • Cleaning to prepare for storage or cooking

  • Vacuum sealing to lock in freshness and protect quality

  • Flash freezing to preserve texture and flavor

This process is designed to maintain the quality of your catch from the moment it leaves the water to the moment it hits your table. The goal is simple. When you get home and open your freezer, it should feel like you are right back in Alaska.

Understanding Yields

One of the most common questions we hear is how much fish you will actually bring home.

Fish yield refers to the percentage of usable fillet compared to total fish weight, and it varies by species.

Imaging opening your freezer to this everyday...

Typical yields:

  • Halibut: 40 to 50 percent

  • Salmon: 50 to 60 percent depending on species

  • Cod: 30 to 40 percent

What that means for you:

  • Halibut = larger, dense fillets and high volume

  • Salmon = great yield and versatility

  • Cod = lighter yield but excellent eating

Understanding this helps you plan for:

  • Freezer space

  • Sharing with friends and family

  • Meals long after your trip ends

Fish Transportation

Once your trip comes to an end, the final step is getting your fish home safely. This is another area where we make the process as smooth as possible.

Our team coordinates the transportation of your packaged fish from the lodge back to Ketchikan International Airport. Everything is handled with care to ensure your fish remains frozen and protected during transit.

You have two primary options when it comes to getting your fish home.

The first option is to bring it with you. Many guests choose this route because it offers the most control and reliability. SeaWind Aviation assists with transporting your fish to the airport, where it can be checked for your commercial flight home. This is the most common and recommended method.

The second option is to ship your fish through a third party vendor. While this is available, we generally advise guests to travel with their fish when possible. Shipping can introduce variables that are outside of our control, including delays or handling issues. We are happy to provide recommended vendors if needed, but the lodge does not oversee third party shipping.

No matter which option you choose, our team will walk you through the process and make sure everything is prepared properly for departure.

Why It Matters

Catching fish is only part of the experience. Bringing it home and enjoying it later is what keeps the trip alive long after you leave.

Every fillet you cook becomes a reminder of early mornings on the water, the sound of the reel, and the people you shared the experience with. That is why we take so much care in how your fish is processed and transported.

You are not just leaving with a cooler full of fish. You are leaving with something you can share, something you can relive, and something that extends your trip far beyond your time at the lodge.

Final Note

From the moment your fish is landed to the moment it reaches your home, every detail is handled with intention. Filleted, portioned, sealed, frozen, and transported with care, your catch is treated like it matters, because it does.

At Sportsman’s Cove Lodge, we make sure the experience does not end when you leave the water. It continues all the way to your table.
